In 2012, Ruth Ross was confronted by an experience that is shared by thousands of women: breast cancer. Prior to this diagnosis, Ross had started painting the experience of aging, but when she was submerged in the ice-cold waters of illness, the paintings and the focus changed. In her own words, "The challenge for me was how to paint my totally lost self. My identity, indeed my very gender, had gone missing. Instead of relying on the outside for my validation, I had to look deeply inside."
